The Nitrogen Gap

Sometimes plants grow so fast that the soil cannot supply nitrogen as quickly as they need it. Growth slows. We call that the Gap. Thriva helps keep growth going.

Thriva Boost in a thriving vegetable garden

When soil supply falls behind

Plants need nitrogen to build chlorophyll, leaves, and stems. Much of the nitrogen in soil organic matter, compost, and many organic fertilizers must first be converted by soil organisms into a form roots can use. That process changes with temperature, moisture, and soil conditions.

During rapid growth, a plant can need usable nitrogen faster than the soil releases it. That temporary mismatch is the nitrogen gap. Growth may slow or older leaves may begin to pale, although those signs can have other causes.

Build the soil before the season. Feed the plant during the season.

Before planting, use finished compost and soil-building fertilizers—such as Dr. Earth products when they fit your plan—to establish organic matter and broad fertility. Some of those products are labeled for in-season use; our preference is simply to do the major soil building before the crop is growing.

During active growth, Thriva provides measured ammonium nitrogen in a form roots can use directly. Thriva is a focused 5-0-0 nitrogen fertilizer, not a complete fertilizer, so follow the label and account for the other nutrients your garden receives.
